Police: Woman reported false robbery

An employee of a downtown Franklin shop reported a false robbery because she didn’t want to work alone during the day, police said.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Friday, an employee of the Rugged Roost, located at 383 E. Madison St., reported that two men had come in and demanded the store’s cash box, with one implying he had a weapon, according to the Franklin Police Department report.

Police set up a perimeter to search the area and locked down the nearby Franklin Boys & Girls Club for about 20 minutes as a precaution, the report said.

The employee told police the men implied they had a weapon and demanded the store’s cash box, she refused and they ran out of the store, the report said.

Police got surveillance video from a nearby businesses and saw two men leave the store around the time she reported the robbery, but they were not running and walked to another nearby shop, the report said.

Officers confronted the employee, who said she gets uncomfortable working by herself and told her boss the robbery story so he would get someone else to work with her during the day, the report said.

No one was arrested. Police are sending the report to the Johnson County Prosecutor who will decide what, if any, charges to file.
