Man arrested after accident, pursuit

A Shelbyville man was arrested after a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 65 and a pursuit with police.

Robert J. Dezelan, 55, 915 Blue River Way, Apt. C, was arrested on a charge of resisting law enforcement.

Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, police were called about a vehicle north of Whiteland Road that had struck one vehicle and nearly hit several others and then drove away.

Another driver followed the vehicle as it got off I-65 onto State Road 44 and headed east. Police caught up to the vehicle, which refused to stop and reached speeds of 100 mph in Shelby County, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Police put out spike strips, which are used to deflate a vehicle’s tires, and the vehicle stopped, the report said.

Dezelan, the driver, told police he did strike another vehicle on the interstate but didn’t think it was hard enough for him to have to stop, the report said.

Dezelan was arrested and taken to the Shelby County Jail.
