Three shot, one dead in Greenwood shooting

Police are trying to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to a person being shot to death, and two others injured by gunfire, in a reported robbery in Greenwood on Thursday morning.

By the afternoon, investigators were still doing interviews and determining how many people were involved and who was a witness, suspect and victim, police said.

The incident began at 10:20 a.m. at a home at 509 N. Meridian St., which is in downtown Greenwood, Greenwood police said. The person who called 911 reported a robbery and police were given the description of a suspect vehicle. Police were told that shots had been fired, Greenwood Police Assistant Chief Matt Fillenwarth said.

Two men were found at a nearby church, and a woman was taken into custody after a traffic stop on County Line Road, about a mile away.

Police were sorting out each person’s involvement.

A man who was shot in the chest died at an Indianapolis hospital, police said. Two men, shot in the abdomen and the leg, were being treated for their injuries.

A juvenile also had been taken into custody, police said.

Two men ran from the scene and were tracked by a police dog and found at Greenwood United Methodist Church, which they likely came upon as they were seeking shelter from the cold and because one of them was injured, Fillenwarth said.

As officers tracked them to the church on Madison Avenue, people at the church called police to report two men had arrived and were telling a suspicious story about a car being broken down.

Officers also found a matching vehicle moments after the initial 911 call came in about a mile away at County Line Road, Fillenwarth said. And officers found other people involved at the home where the call originally came from.

Police dogs were initially brought to the scene, and officers were on foot searching for all the people involved. In less than an hour, police said they had located everyone involved, and detectives were beginning to sort through what happened, Fillenwarth said.

Northeast and Isom elementary schools were on lockdown for less than an hour, but the restriction had been lifted shortly after 11 a.m.
