1 center still on trial period

Last year, eight local day care centers were put on probation after violations were found during state inspections.

As of this week, only one remained on probation after a violation was found during an inspection in December, according to the state.

The other day cares are no longer on probation, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, which oversees day cares, said.

State officials had said at one time, when six local day care centers were on probation, that local centers made up nearly a third of those on probation throughout the state. But officials said the number was a coincidence, rather than evidence of a problem in Johnson County.

The violations that led to local day care centers being put on probation were different, ranging from not having enough caregivers to meet required child-to-staff ratios to children being left unsupervised.

In each case, the day care center was issued a probationary license after the issues were cited during an inspection. The licenses, which typically last 90 days, require the center to correct any issues and undergo additional inspections.

The centers that were put on probation were:

Rainbow Child Care Center, located on Smith Valley Road, issued a probationary license after three children were found unsupervised in the parking lot.

Canary Creek Head Start, Franklin, put on probation after a child wandered away and was found in a nearby parking lot.

Country Kids Pre-School and Childcare, Trafalgar, on probation after the center had too few staff watching children.

Building Bridges Early Learning Center, Greenwood, issued a probationary license after a child was inappropriately disciplined.

Childtime Learning Center, Whiteland, put on probation after an inspection found the center did not have enough staff watching children.

Especially Kids, Greenwood, issued a probationary license after two children were left unsupervised on the playground.

KinderCare Learning Center in the Center Grove area, put on probation after a worker used inappropriate discipline with a child.

Bright Beginning Early Learning Academy, run by Center Grove schools, issued a probationary license after a staff member fell asleep while supervising toddlers.

According to state records, all but one day care center has completed its probationary license and has since been issued a regular license.

Childtime Learning Center in Whiteland still has a probationary license, which was issued after an incident in December where an infant was given breast milk that was sent to the daycare for another infant, according to state records.
