Man arrested after accident on U.S. 31

A man was arrested after driving the wrong way on U.S. 31, then going off the road and striking a fence.

The crash happened just before 10 a.m. Thursday, between Stop 18 and Worthsville roads, according to the Greenwood police report. Another driver stopped when he saw the vehicle cross the highway and go off the road, concerned the driver had a medical condition, the report said.

The driver, Homer Dersch, 44, 503 S. Dongola Road, Oakland City, told police he had smoked spice, a synthetic marijuana, and that it was stronger than he was used to, the report said.

The officer found synthetic marijuana, methamphetamine and a needle when searching Dersch and his vehicle, the report said.

Dersch was arrested on a charge of possession of a methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a vehicle under the influence.

He was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $8,800 bond.
