New Franklin mayor hires engineer, PR director

The new mayor of Franklin has hired a new city engineer and a new director of public relations.

Mayor Steve Barnett, who was selected in a Republican caucus earlier this week, announced the new hires on Friday.

Mark Richards was hired as the new city engineer, replacing Travis Underhill, who left the city to work for former Mayor Joe McGuinness at the Indiana Department of Transportation. Richards currently works as the city engineer for Greenwood, where he oversees city improvements and projects. He will start work in Franklin on Feb. 27, according to a news release from the city.

“The municipality background with his knowledge and experience makes him a key addition to the city of Franklin,” Barnett said in the news release. “This appointment is a sign of our commitment to the success of our current and future projects. We are fortunate that we were able to quickly find someone with a record of exceptional quality of work to fulfill this demanding role.”

Barnett also hired Tara Payne as the city’s director of public relations. Payne was the executive director of Discover Downtown Franklin, which oversees downtown events. She is resigning from that position, effective Monday.
