Science Spark Club

Students can get their fill of STEM at a new club coming to Johnson County.

The Johnson County 4-H and Extension Office is now offering a 4-H Science Spark Club.

Heather Dougherty, extension educator for 4-H Youth Development tells you what you need to know about the club.

When is the club?

6:30 to 8 p.m. April 5, 12 and 26 at the Johnson County Extension office, 484 N. Morton St., Franklin.

Who can enroll?

All youth in grades 3 to 12.

What is the deadline to enroll?

Please register by March 17 by going online to enroll in the “SPARK Club — Johnson County” at in.4honline.com

How many students can enroll?

The number of youth or students that can enroll in this program is 20.

What will they learn?

In the Science SPARK club each session will focus on various areas of science and include the experiential learning model, STEM and hands on activities.

Why did you start this program?

This program was started mainly from Purdue University/Indiana 4-H wanting 4-H Youth Development Educators to explore other means of programming through the county through non-traditional 4-H clubs, which is how SPARK clubs were started, so we can “spark” the interest in youth through other programming methods.

What is the curriculum like?

The curriculum for the Science Spark Club was developed by the State Program Specialist with the Indiana State 4-H Office. Most of the curriculum is STEM approved and part of the National 4-H curriculum.

Does a child have to be in 4-H to enroll?

This program is open to ALL youth regardless if they are in 4-H or not. Once youth have paid the $25.00 program fee, then they are considered to part of Indiana 4-H/Johnson County 4-H through Spark Clubs.

How many students are you expecting?

Since this is the first year that I am implementing a Science Spark Club I hope to be able to fill the 20 cap!
