A fire in an agricultural classroom at Indian Creek High School forced the evacuation of students and caused thousands of dollars in damage this week.
The Trafalgar Fire Department was called to the school at 803 Indian Meadows Drive at noon on Wednesday.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a fire in a closet in a classroom, Trafalgar Fire Department Chief Tom Tharpe said.
The fire reached the roof, and damaged part of it. Smoke poured from the classroom and into the school’s gym and locker room areas, he said. The fire department said that combustibles and flammable materials stored in the room caused high heat and heavy smoke in the high school.
“It was a pretty good size area of smoke we had to get out,” Tharpe said.
No one was injured.
The school’s more than 600 students were evacuated from the building and were outside for about 25 minutes. They resumed classes after the firefighters contained the fire and deemed the unaffected parts of the building safe, Tharpe said.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire. The fire caused thousands of dollars in fire and smoke damage, he said.
