Road work ahead

Repaving begins next week on U.S. 31 from Smith Valley Road to Stop 18 Road as part of an Indianapolis Department of Transportation road repair and resurfacing project that includes work on U.S. 31 and State Road 135 through Johnson County this spring.

What will be closed

Two lanes will be closed at a time on U.S. 31 from Smith Valley Road to Stop 18 Road from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. this week beginning tonight.

What drivers can expect

Drivers may be restricted to a single lane when passing through the work area.

What is the next step?

Tentative plans call for full-depth asphalt patching to occur the following week on U.S. 31 beginning the night of April 24. After that, operations will move to State Road 135 for daytime work between Stones Crossing and Bargersville.

What is the long- term plan?

INDOT plans to resurface and repair U.S. 31 between County Line Road and Stop 18 Road and State Road 135 between Curry Road and County Line Road as well as from Bargersville to Stones Crossing Road.

What does this cost?

The total project is about 10 miles long and will cost $6.1 million.

What’s the effect on motorists?

Nearly 100,000 cars use the roads each day. INDOT said both major north-south roads won’t be closed at the same time, leaving at least one road open for motorists at all times.

When will I know whether to change my route?

The state department of transportation is supposed to announce lane closures several days in advance.
