An ice rink proposed for Greenwood is moving closer to the interstate, and new development is coming with it.
Indy Fuel owners Jim and Sean Hallett initially wanted to develop the Iceplex at Freedom Park on the southwest side of Greenwood, but after pushback from residents and city officials, it is moving to County Line Road and Interstate 65.
That site was previously planned as the Greenwood Town Center, which would have included retail shops. Before that, the site was proposed as a new location for Cabela’s, an outdoor sports retailer, but those plans fell through.
Now, plans are to bring a larger ice rink complex, which will cost $25 million, and to invest another $15 million into other development at the site, including a movie theater, entertainment venue, shops and restaurants.
The city of Greenwood is considering contributing $8.5 million for site improvements, infrastructure and a portion of the sports facility, which will be called the Greenwood Sportsplex.
The city is considering offering up to $3.7 million for site improvements, up to $1.8 million for off-site infrastructure improvements on County Line and Graham roads, and reimbursement of up to $3 million for capital improvements at Greenwood Sportsplex, payable over 10 years with continual operations.
