A pursuit that began with a robbery and carjacking ended at a busy Greenwood intersection, and two bystanders were injured.
The man was treated at Eskenazi Hospital, and taken to the Marion County Jail on an unrelated charge, police said.
Two other people, the clerk of the store who was robbed and the driver of a vehicle struck during the pursuit, were also taken to the hospital.
Police were first called to the Greenwood Discount Tobacco store located at U.S. 31 and Fry Road, just south of Greenwood Park Mall, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The store had been robbed at gunpoint, and the clerk had been pistol whipped. The robber then stole another customer’s vehicle and took off, Greenwood Police Department spokeswoman Kortney Burrello said.
Shortly after, police found the stolen vehicle and a pursuit began. The vehicle turned into the Whispering Trails neighborhood, near State Road 135, where it drove through yards and almost struck vehicles and houses, she said.
The pursuit went back onto Fry Road and headed east. At some points, the driver would show the gun to police, and officers had to back off for their own safety, she said.
At the intersection with U.S. 31, the driver struck another vehicle and a pole, and then climbed out of his window and onto the roof of the stolen van, Burrello said.
The driver yelled at police and stuck his hands in his pockets. Police also wanted to get medical attention to the driver of the vehicle he had struck at the intersection. Police used a Taser, and the driver fell from the top of his vehicle onto the sidewalk, where he was arrested, Burrello said.
Police are now forwarding the report to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office to decide what, if any, charges to file, she said.
