Triton Central hits enough free throws to top Edinburgh

EDINBURGH — Triton Central hit 8 of 12 from the free-throw line in the overtime session to come away with the a 65-57 win Friday night at Edinburgh.

In the extra session, the Tigers scored the first six points to lead 56-50. The Lancers finally got on the scoreboard in overtime when Bryce Burton dropped in two free throws. Christian Cox then cut the lead to 58-54 with an offensive rebound and putback.

However, it was not enough. Triton Central outscored Edinburgh 15-7 to leave with the win.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Lancers (3-2) managed a 44-43 lead, but Cox hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the floor, and Burton added a reverse layup to push the lead to 49-43. A Tigers basket made it a four-point game with less than two minutes left.

During the final minute of the game, missed free throws hurt Edinburgh, and Triton Central (3-2) capitalized on the misses but couldn’t pull out the win in regulation.

Early in the first quarter, the Lancers jumped out to a 5-2 lead after Coltan Henderson drained a 3-pointer. Burton then hit a free throw with 3:56 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6.

The Tigers closed out the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 19-6 first quarter lead.

Once the second quarter started Edinburgh had an uphill battle to climb. Cox hit a 3-pointer, and Justin Fosskuhl had a three-point play at the 5:40 mark to make it 19-12.

Later, Cox had a 2-point bucket, and Parker Bryant nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 23-20. The Lancers then scored the final four points of the quarter to trail 26-24 at the break.

Defensively, Edinburgh picked up the pace a little in the second quarter, forcing the Tigers to turn the ball over seven times, while the Lancers only committed two turnovers.

Edinburgh scored the first four points of the third quarter when Bryant and Cox went back-to-back for the 28-26 lead. After a Triton Central free throw, Henderson drained another 3-pointer, and Bryant hit two free throws for a 33-27 lead.

Bryant had a steal and layup at the 2:59 mark to give the Lancers a 35-30 lead. Henderson knocked down his second 3-pointer of the quarter for the 38-32 lead. The Lancers outscored the Tigers 16-12 in the third quarter to lead 40-38 with one quarter left in regulation.

Edinburgh was led by Henderson, who scored 15 points. Bryant added 14.
