Franklin Ivy Tech campus offers 1st nursing program

Students looking to pursue a career in nursing will be able to take the first steps toward getting that degree at a community college campus in Franklin.

Starting this week, Ivy Tech Community College of Franklin is offering the first year of classes needed to earn an associate degree in nursing. This program, which will accept 20 students each semester, was approved as an extension of the Ivy Tech Indianapolis Nursing program. Ivy Tech spent about $450,000 renovating a 3,000-square-foot space on its Franklin campus.

Part of that renovation included a nursing skills lab, which will provide hands-on learning for students, a news release said.

Students will be able to complete the first year at the Franklin campus and finish the program at Ivy Tech’s Lawrence Fairbanks Center in Indianapolis, the news release said.

Concerns about a shortage of nurses have been widespread among health care facilities in the county, with medical providers constantly recruiting candidates to keep their staff levels up. In November, Johnson Memorial Health had openings for 41 full- and part-time positions.
