WHITELAND

Kathy M. (Thomas) Tames, 68, of Whiteland, passed away Friday, January 12, 2018.

Kathy was born to the late William D. and Etta Marie Thomas in Franklin in 1949. During high school, Kathy was the Feature Twirler of the Whiteland Marching Band. After graduating Whiteland Community High School in 1967, Kathy graduated from IU School of Nursing in 1969. In the 1960’s Kathy was in competitive roller skating. She was a member of the Franklin Skate Club. For 47 years, Kathy was a registered nurse, for 25 years, she was employed with Community Hospital South. She also worked at Johnson Memorial Hospital, and IU Health-Methodist Hospital. Along with being a registered nurse, she was a Firefighter/EMT for the Whiteland Fire Department. She became the first female firefighter in Johnson County in 1977. She worked for New Whiteland Fire Department from 1975-1979 and later from 1993-1997. She went on to work with the Whiteland Fire Department from 1997 to when she retired in 2015. She became an Honorary Member of the department from 2015 to present.

Kathy was very active in the Whiteland and New Whiteland communities, she was on the New Whiteland Town Council from 1981-1986 and the Whiteland Town Council from 1988-1991. For six years, Kathy was the chairman of the Greater Whiteland 4th of July Festival. In 1986, she was chairman for the Whiteland Centennial celebrations. She was a major developer of the Whiteland Parks Department. Kathy facilitated the lighting of the Christmas lights in town. She was an active member of the Republican Party.

Kathy is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Keith) Buis of Martinsville; a sister, Kay (Ed) Koons of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Billy and Beth Buis; a niece, Michelle (Koons) Holden of Florida; and two great-nieces, Mackenzie and Mallory.

A visitation will be Thursday January 18th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 N. U.S. HWY 31. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday January 19th at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
