Vesta Mae Hill

Vesta Mae (Arnett) Hill, age 96, died on January 15, 2018 at Otterbein Franklin Senior Life Community in Franklin, Indiana. She was a resident of Franklin United Methodist Community for 27 years and a former resident of Indianapolis. Born on July 21, 1921 in Pleasant Hill, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles H. and Maude (Pierce) Arnett.

She married Frederick D. Hill in Pleasant Hill, Ohio, on November 26, 1945. She is survived by her daughter, Terry Spencer of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky; five grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Yingst, her twin; and Betty Hare; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband Frederick D. Hill, daughter Judy Rank of Stow, Ohio, her sister Bernice Jones, and two brothers, Samuel Emerson Arnett and Roscoe Arnett preceded her in death.

In 1944 Vesta graduated from the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, passed the Ohio State Board Examination, becoming a registered nurse. In 1970 she completed her BS in Nursing with high distinction and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. Then she received her MS in Nursing in 1977. Both degrees were earned at IUPUI.

Early in 1945, after a few months on the staff of Piqua Memorial Hospital, Piqua, Ohio, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a second lieutenant. She was stationed at Wakeman General Hospital at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. She also held full time nursing positions at Grant Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio and for nearly twenty years at the Bureau of Community Health Nursing of the Marion County Health Department at Indianapolis. At the time of her retirement in 1984, she was Assistant Administrator of Nursing Research and Evaluation.

Following retirement, Vesta worked part-time as data manager for Midwest Alliance in Nursing. Then she and her husband went south a few weeks each winter for ten years to work with NOMADS as Volunteers In Mission for the United Methodist Church. She also taught watercolor, oil painting and crafts for her fellow residents at Franklin United Methodist Community.

Vesta was a charter member of Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church where she taught a young adult Sunday school class for many years and was active in United Methodist Women.

Rev. Jenothy Rather will conduct a service on Sunday, January 21st at 2:00 p.m. at the Otterbein Franklin Senior Life Community, Wright Chapel in Franklin with calling from 1:00 p.m. to time of service at the chapel. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin. Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin is assisting the family with arrangements.
