The Johnson County Voter Registration Office has seen a steady flow of residents coming in to file for election and expects that to keep up, deputy clerk Reagan Hidgon said. Here is a look at some answers to common questions about the next steps heading into the 2018 primary election on May 8.
When does voter registration end?
Voter registration ends April 9. In-person registration ends when the voter registration office closes at 4:30 p.m. Online registration ends at midnight.
How do you register to vote?
Voters can register to vote or update their voter registration online at indianavoters.in.gov, by mailing a voter registration form to the Indiana Election Division or the Johnson County Voter Registration Office (mail-in voter registration forms must be postmarked by April 9), or by filling out the form and turning it in at the Indiana Election Division or Johnson County Voter Registration Office.
When does voting begin?
Early voting can legally begin as soon as April 10. Typically, the county begins early voting at the courthouse, and then opens additional locations as Election Day gets closer. Where those additional locations will be or when they will be open has not yet been decided.
How can you file to become a candidate?
Residents running for township, municipal or county offices can file for office at the Johnson County Voter Registration Office at the Johnson County Courthouse, 5 E. Jefferson St., Franklin. Residents filing for state or federal office must do so at the Indiana Secretary of State’s office at 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, or with the Indiana Election Division in room E-204 of the Indiana Government Center at 302 W. Washington St., Indianapolis. If the form is mailed in, the candidate will need to have it notarized.
