SWAT team called to Franklin home

A SWAT incident in a Franklin neighborhood closed streets and rerouted school buses Thursday afternoon.

Just after 12:30 p.m., police were called to a home on Oak Leaf Road, off U.S. 31 near Westview Drive, where a man had been making threats to harm himself, Franklin Police Chief Tim O’Sullivan said.

The wife was on her way home when she called police, and the man was home alone, he said.

The man said he had weapons, and the wife confirmed that weapons were inside the home, so police took extra precautions, including closing the roads and alerting Franklin schools, O’Sullivan said. At one school, students were brought back to the building when buses could not go into the area, and parents were called.

Police were not initially able to make contact with the man, who barricaded himself inside the home. The SWAT team was called to the area, and staged in nearby Franklin Place Apartments, O’Sullivan said.

Negotiators were able to make contact with the man and calm him down. He eventually came out of the home and surrendered peacefully, O’Sullivan said. He was taken for an evaluation at a hospital, he said.
