Brown County senior Ezra Scully tried to will the Eagles to a win against Edinburgh on Thursday, but the Lancers did just enough to spoil his home finale.
Coltan Henderson opened the game with three first-quarter 3-pointers to help give Edinburgh an early lead, and Christian Cox picked it up in the fourth quarter to send the Lancers to a 48-39 win to close the regular season.
Henderson made four 3-pointers and ended with a team-high 18 points.
“It was good to finally see the ball go through the hoop,” Henderson said. “I had been struggling a little bit this year with my shot. A little bit off from last year, but it’s nice to see the ball go through the hoop and get ready for sectional next week.”
Henderson’s solid 3-point shooting helped give the Lancers (15-8) a 16-10 lead to end the first quarter, but the Eagles (4-18) held them to just four points in the second quarter to cut the Edinburgh lead to 20-18 by halftime.
Scully struggled shooting the ball in the first half, but caught fire in the third quarter. He scored 12 of Brown County’s 14 third-quarter points on his way to a game-high 19 points. Scully’s third-quarter effort gave the Eagles a 32-31 lead heading into the final period.
Edinburgh then held Scully to zero fourth-quarter points and got him into foul trouble. Scully fouled out with a little over a minute left to play.
Cox said he played poorly the first three quarters, but he stepped it up for the Lancers in the final eight minutes. He scored 10 of his 14 points in the final period to help Edinburgh create enough distance to hold off the Eagles.
“I kept telling him the whole game, ‘You can’t stop shooting. You have to shoot your way out of it, basically, and keep attacking the rim,’” Edinburgh coach Keith Witty said. “I just told him that, ‘We need you, and you have to keep driving through.’”
