Election 2018: Make your choice for Johnson County sheriff

Three Republicans are vying to be your next Johnson County sheriff.

We’ve spent hours with each candidate, asking them questions on a range of issues that reveal their specific proposals for the future of the jail or how to deal with suspects or inmates who are addicted to drugs or have mental health issues or offer a glimpse into their leadership and management style.

The Republican candidates are Duane Burgess, Kirby Cochran and Stoney Vann. Voters who cast a Republican ballot in the May 8 primary will select one of the candidates to advance to the November general election.

The sheriff serves a four-year term and is responsible for managing one of the biggest expenses for county government — the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and jail.

In Saturday’s newspaper, we look at the crowding problem inside the jail, the history of expansions and proposed expansions and the plans of each candidate.
