Threatening list found at school

Franklin school officials are investigating after a list with student names was found on an elementary school playground.

School officials described the list, which included the names of several students, as being threatening.

The list was found around 2 p.m. Thursday under a picnic table on the playground at Northwood Elementary School, Franklin Schools Superintendent David Clendening said.

Students found the list and brought it to the attention of teachers, Clendening said.

School officials contacted the parents of each of the children whose names were on the list, along with the parents of the kids who found it, he said.

The school then sent an automated message about what was found to all parents at the school.

School officials are investigating and said they don’t know whether the list was meant to be serious, but they wanted to inform parents of what happened and try to stop any rumors from spreading, Clendening said. Even if a student perceived the list as a joke, officials have to take it seriously, he said.

“With all of the things that are happening in the communities around the nation, we just want to be sure we are communicating with parents,” he said.

School officials will continue investigating today, and are trying to figure out who made the list, he said. Officials also are asking that anyone with information about the list to contact the school, he said.

The school resource officer will be at the school today, and officials will be available to talk with any students who have concerns, he said.

Last month, an 11-year-old Custer Baker Intermediate School student made a list at school of about 12 teachers and classmates that she wanted to kill, prompting an investigation after a fellow student told a teacher. The girl was suspended and taken to a hospital for an overnight mental health evaluation after the list was discovered.

Two Center Grove Elementary School students also were arrested last month after posting a threat on a website after police and FBI agents traced the threat back to the students.
