Trojans girls set three school records at MIC meet

Center Grove set three school records Friday night in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls track and field meet on Friday.

With all eight conference programs ranked in the state’s top 20, the No. 7 Trojans rose to the level of competition.

Sophomore Kiyah Yeast took first in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, winning the former in a record time of 12.02 seconds. Yeast also ran anchor for the second-place 4×100 relay, teaming with Ashley Wheat, Hailey Goines and Julia Riley for a new school standard of 48.39.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

Perhaps the best race of the night was the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, in which Warren Central’s senior Kennedy Batts scored a photo-finish win. Her time of 14.35 seconds was fastest by one-hundredth of a second over Goines.

Goines’ time of 14.36 is a new school record.

“Hailey sat out for two weeks. She got 5-4 1/4 in the high jump, 17-5 in long jump and got her best time ever in the 100 hurdles, so I’m pretty pleased with that,” Center Grove coach Wes Dodson said. “I’m also proud that Julia Riley banged her ankle in that race and she helped run a school record in the 4×100.

“That shows some real toughness. She ran that third leg like a champ.”

Dodson’s goal of a top-four finish for his team in the final standings became reality. The Trojans nabbed fourth with a total of 86 points.

Yeast set a high standard for herself last season as a freshman, but seems determined to do so again. Her 100 preliminary time of 12.12 edged Olivia Rassel’s former mark of 12.13; she later returned and proved even more impressive.

“The 12.02 I ran is also a big PR and close to what I want to get to this season,” Yeast said. “It feels good because it really tells me that I’m on the right track for the season to get the time that I want to reach, which is around an 11.8.

“It’s definitely been about working on the little things. Just tweaking some stuff and getting my form and starts better.”

In the boys meet, the pole vault competition had yet to be completed by press time. Up to that point, the Trojans had produced a pair of conference champions in senior Matt Fleener and junior Sam Hohlt.

Fleener dominated the field in the 400-meter dash, grabbing the lead early and never letting up in running a personal best of 49.10 seconds.

“For us, this is the second-biggest meet of the year other than sectionals and regionals,” Fleener said. “I’m just running my race and trying to beat the (school) record. It’s right where I want to be at this point of the season.

“By state I would like to be in the high 47s.”

Hohlt, too, assumed control in his specialty, winning in 38.81 seconds — nearly an entire second faster than the second-place finisher.

“The kids competed hard and finished ahead of what they were seeded. Matt Fleener winning the 400 like he did was great for him,” Center Grove coach Eric Moore said. “And Sam works really hard and is deserving. He had an excellent time.”
