Shepherd advances in match play

Erica Shepherd and playing partner Megan Furtney birdied the first two holes and stayed on top throughout in defeating Alexandra Swayne and Sarah Willis, 3 and 1, in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship on Monday.

Swayne and Willis got back to within one hole by taking the 11th, but Shepherd and Furtney responded by winning the next two holes.

“We were up the whole time, so it was never too like jittery close,” Shepherd said, “but they kept it close, and then we didn’t give them too many shots. We always had birdie or par putts, so a pretty relaxed day.”

The field will be cut down to four teams with two rounds of play today. Shepherd and Furtney, seeded 13th after stroke play, will take on No. 4 seeds Haley Moore and Gigi Stoll in the round of 16.
