Forty new apartments planned in Greenwood

A new development would add 40 new apartments along Worthsville Road in Greenwood.

The apartment complex, Providence Place of Greenwood, is planned to be built on an undeveloped two-acre property south of Worthsville Road and west of U.S. 31, Greenwood Planning Director Bill Peeples said.

The land, next to Summerfield Village, has been zoned for commercial use for more than a decade. The developer has requested a building permit, which would be awarded once city boards have finished reviewing the project, he said.

The developer has told the city he wants to begin construction in June and have the project complete in October. The complex will have one three-story building with 24 units, as well as a two-story building with 16 units, with an entrance on Providence Drive, Peeples said.

The developer will likely be asked to hold off on sidewalk and landscaping improvements on the north side of the property until work on Worthsville Road is complete, Peeples said. A project to widen Worthsville Road from U.S. 31 to Averitt Road is set to take place in 2020.
