Incumbents get nod in council races

Two incumbents retained the Republican nomination for their seats on the Johnson County Council.

Voters selected Pete Ketchum with 58 percent of the vote for the District 1 seat, and Rob Henderson won with 53 percent of the vote for the District 2 seat.

Both races were close, with Justin Griggs, who challenged Ketchum, winning 42 percent of the vote, and Steve Byerly, who ran against Henderson, getting 47 percent of the vote.

Ketchum, a retired Franklin police officer who now works as security coordinator for Cummins, currently does not face an opponent for the District 1 seat that represents a wide swath of the county, including part of White River Township and all of Union, Hensley, Nineveh, Blue River, Needham and Clark townships.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

Henderson, senior vice president of commercial loans at Mutual Savings Bank, will face a challenge from Democrat Thomas Jackson in the fall for the District 2 seat that represents part of Pleasant Township and all of Franklin Township.

The seven-member county council oversees the county’s finances, including how much should be spent on sheriff’s deputies to patrol neighborhoods and streets, and projects to repave and rebuild local roads or if any taxes should be increased. No other county council members faced a challenger this spring.

Whoever is elected to the council this fall will be making decisions about how to pay for a possible jail expansion and the costs to staff and operate the facility, including the option of an increase to the local income tax that has been discussed as a possibility.
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="How You Voted" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Johnson County Council District 1
