Narrow victories for 2 newcomers in Bargersville council race

A retired bank president and an investment manager earned the Republican Party nomination for two at-large seats on the Bargersville Town Council.

Larry W. Gates received 385 votes and R. Dustin Doyle received 318 votes, giving them the top two vote tallies out of a field of five candidates.

“I’m pleased with my supporters and will do everything I can to justify that confidence,” Gates said.

Doyle won his nomination after receiving eight more votes than the third top vote-getter.

“I’m a bit speechless,” he said. “It is probably one of those things that the hand shaking and people I talked with in the final days may have pushed those extra eight votes.”

Paulette Rae Brown, who works at Interstate Towing, Doyle, a self-employed investment manager, Gates, a retired bank president, Roger D. Hitz, a retired project supervisor for the Indiana Department of Transportation, and Rob Lowden, an associate vice president in Indiana University’s IT department, were the five candidates in the race.

Incumbents Jim Beck and Rowana Umbarger did not file to run for re-election.

No candidates filed to run for the Bargersville Town Council in the Democratic primary. The party has until June 30 to select two candidates.

What steps the town should take to manage a growing population and the development of new homes and businesses, as well as the need to make improvements to County Road 144 were some of the issues candidates said were key for the community.

The town council is responsible for making decisions such as road improvements, hiring police officers, improving public parks and for how tax revenue should be used to fund those needs.
