Woodmen edged by No. 1 Dragons

Greenwood went into New Palestine on Monday ā€” where the hosts, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, hadn’t lost in over three years ā€” and jumped on the Dragons early. But an early lead didn’t hold up, as the Dragons roared back to win 9-8 on a walk-off home run.

The Woodmen led 6-0 in the second inning after an Allison Hayes grand slam and kept the high-powered Dragons offense in check through six innings, leading 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh behind a strong pitching performance from pitcher Karlee Denham.

New Palestine opened the seventh with a single and a walk, then blasted a three-run home run to pull within one. A single and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position before the Dragons’ Tatum Biddle ended the game with a home run.

Greenwood had nine hits on the day and were led by Hayes, who had a double, home run and the four RBIs. Alexis Rees and Kiley Hankenhoff each added two hits for the Woodmen.
