Man arrested after running from officer while handcuffed

Two people were arrested after officers were called to check on a car parked in a Greenwood neighborhood.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested after running from the officer, while handcuffed, and then fighting with the officer, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

Braden Evans, 18, of 4403 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement, battery on a public safety official, possession of marijuana, escape and disorderly conduct. Julie McDermott, 18, of 1175 Brushwood Way, Greenwood, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and trafficking with an inmate, after a search at the jail found she was carrying marijuana.

Around 9:45 p.m. Thursday, an officer checked on a car parked on Carol Drive in the Parkview Estates neighborhood after a resident called about people potentially smoking marijuana in the car, the report said.

The officer smelled marijuana, and arrested both Evans and McDermott. After handcuffing Evans, the officer was talking with McDermott when Evans ran away. The officer chased after Evans, who dropped to the ground and the officer fell on top of him. A resident came to help the officer with Evans until other police came, the report said. The officer reported injuries to his shin, wrist and forearm, the report said.

Evans was held at the Johnson County jail on $7,700 bond. McDermott was released on $3,000 bond.
