Strawberries on the Square planned

A popular summer dessert is coming to Franklin.

Memorial Day weekend opens with strawberry shortcake at the annual Strawberries on the Square festival, starting at 11 a.m. Friday.

Volunteers will serve cake, ice cream, fresh strawberries, whipped cream and a bottle of water for $5 on the courthouse lawn until the dessert runs out.

The festival will include the Lions Club Fish Fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the parking lot at Water and Monroe streets. Diners can choose from fish and tenderloin sandwiches, hot dogs, home made baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, chips and assorted pies, cakes and cookies. Eat in the tent or take it with you. Carryout will be available.

Evening activities include a classic car cruise-in at 5 p.m. on North Main Street, kids activities, live music and the movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” at the Artcraft Theatre at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Friday. Performances from the Electric Impulse will be at 6 p.m. Family Yoga is at 5 p.m. Food trucks will also be serving from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Live music and other activities are planned throughout the day with the last musical performance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday. The annual garage sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in the parking lot on North Main Street across from the Historic Artcraft Theatre.
