Gun from shooting found in search

A gun that was used in a Greenwood shooting last month was found during a search this week, police said.

About 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, police searched a home in the 1500 block of Black Oak Court in Franklin after getting a search warrant.

Inside, they found marijuana, cocaine and heroin, along with a gun that was stolen and then used in a recent shooting, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

Police arrested Antonio L. Mitzs, 29, and Melanie R. Mudd, 25, both of 1562 Black Oak Court, Franklin, on charges of possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Mitzs was also arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and an additional charge of possession of cocaine.

Police searched the home and found Mitzs and Mudd sleeping on mattresses in the garage. They found marijuana on the floor between them, cocaine under Mitzs bed and heroin in a car seat in the garage, according to the report.

Officers also found a handgun inside the garage, and when they checked the serial number, they found it had been reported stolen in Indianapolis in January, the report said. Mitzs told police he bought it off someone in Indianapolis for $600, the report said.

Investigators had been looking into a shooting at a Bay Shore Apartments in Greenwood last month, where a man was shot in the back and hospitalized. They had recently spoken to Mitzs, who said he did not know anything about the shooting incident, the report said.

After police found the gun this week, Mitzs told police he was at the scene and had fired his gun toward people from the apartment after they fired at him. He said he wanted police to know in case casings from the apartment shooting match the gun he had, the report said.

Police are continuing to investigate. The Johnson County Prosecutor will decide what, if any, charges to file in relation to the drugs, the gun and the shooting.

Mitzs and Mudd were both taken to the Johnson County jail. Mitzs was held on $81,200 bond, and Mudd was held on $9,200 bond.
