Man arrested after theft of guitars

A Greenwood man was arrested after police said he stole and sold two guitars from his landlord last week.

Corey Cordell, 26, was arrested on charges of burglary, theft, and possession of a drug injection device.

A resident in the 1000 block of Plymouth Rock Way told police that two guitars and case, valued at about $1,900, were stolen from his garage early Friday morning. He had left the garage door open and had been awakened by noise around 3 a.m. When he went to check, he saw that a motion activated light was on. Later that day, he noticed that one guitar was missing, but didn’t realize right away that a second had been stolen as well, a Greenwood Police Department report said.

The resident told police that he suspected that a tenant he was evicting may have stolen the guitar, the report said.

After checking pawn shop records, an officer located the stolen guitar at an Indianapolis pawn shop, which said it had purchased the instrument from Cordell for $50 on Friday, the report said. In an interview with police on Monday, Cordell said that he stole and sold both guitars, one to a pawn shop and another to a woman. He said the money was to purchase drugs. Cordell had a bag with him that had a syringe, which he said he used with heroin, the report said.

Cordell, who did not list an address, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. He was held on $9,000 bond.
