Greenwood VFW finds new home

A Greenwood veterans organization plans to opens its new building in an industrial park on the east side of the city.

Having outgrown its current facility at 333 S. Washington St., Greenwood VFW Post 5864 has been looking for a new home and raising funds for a $1.3 million project to build a facility that will be double the size of what they currently have.

Earlier this year, Greenwood agreed to purchase the VFW’s current home, which is adjacent to the city’s public works building, which it intends to expand or replace.

The VFW plans to purchase a 3.6-acre property on Commerce Parkway West Drive. The property is in the Precedent South Business Center, near the Interstate 65 and Main Street interchange. The Greenwood Board of Zoning Appeals approved an exception allowing the VFW to build at the site, post commander Steve Milbourn said.

Construction is set to begin later this summer once designs are complete, with the goal of moving into the new building by the start of February, he said.
