Two charged with neglect

Two people were charged with neglect after police said they were overdosing in a car with a child.

Samanthia J. Thompson, 23, and Michael A. Tanner, 31, both of Columbus, were charged with the felony count after an incident in May at a Whiteland truck stop.

Police were called to the truck stop on Whiteland Road, near Interstate 65, where bystanders had reported a man and woman were possibly overdosing.

Officers found Thompson leaning against a vehicle parked at a fuel pump. A bystander was waving his arms and pointing to Tanner, who was lying on the ground. When officers got to Tanner, his eyes were rolled back in his head and his breathing was shallow. Emergency workers gave Tanner a dose of Narcan, which is used to reverse an overdose.

A bystander had seen what was happening and took the child out of the car seat and into the nearby gas station, to get her away from the incident outside. They learned the child did not belong to the couple, and they had been babysitting her for a friend while he was at work.

Tanner and Thompson were both taken to the hospital for treatment and were not arrested at the time.
