Resident loses cash in scam

A Johnson County woman was scammed out of money by someone who she thought was her grandson.

The woman told police Saturday that she received a call from a man who she thought was her grandson. He told her he was in jail for driving while intoxicated and he needed bail money, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

He told her to split the money on two prepaid debit cards and asked her to read the car numbers off to him over the phone. The woman told police she later realized she was a victim of fraud after speaking with family members, the report said.

She told police she wanted to report the fraud to make them aware and able to prevent another scam from happening to someone else, the report said.
