Preparing for competition

Getting a 1-year-old steer ready for competition Tuesday morning took a group effort as a trio of boys worked to get the animal completely washed and groomed.

Two brothers, 15-year-old Keegan and 11-year-old Landon Sichting, and their cousin, 17-year-old Nathaniel Oliver took about 20 minutes to give a full bath to their cleverly named steer, Sir Loin.

After an initial hosing down with water, all three boys worked with scrub brushes and hands to rub the steer’s entire coat down as thoroughly as they could. At the fair, cattle get a bath once a day, though if the temperatures are hot enough, they might bring them out again for a rinsing to get them cooled off, Keegan Sichting said.

With the steer soaped up, scrubbed and rinsed, the last step was to walk him in front of a few fans to dry off before being brushed and ready for competitions later in the day, Keegan Sichting said.

They’ll take Sir Loin to a couple of competitions, including the 4-H Beef Steer Show and the 4-H Born and Raised Steer Show, Keegan Sichting said
