Woman held at knifepoint, man arrested

A man was arrested after police said he hit and choked a woman and held her at knifepoint for at least an hour.

Joseph R. Hicks, 50, Greenwood, was arrested on a charge of domestic battery, criminal confinement and strangulation.

Just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a woman walking in a nightgown near Smith Valley and Morgantown roads. The woman had a black eye and dried blood on her leg, and was very upset, the report said.

The woman told the deputy that Hicks had become angry with her and began hitting her and then held her inside her home with a knife. Hicks had also choked her, the report said.

Hicks also broke multiple items inside the home.

The woman told the deputy she is afraid of Hicks. She managed to sneak out of the home when Hicks fell asleep and was walking to a relative’s home, the report said.

Deputies went to the home and looked in the woman’s bedroom, and found the room destroyed, with the ceiling fan ripped down, the door kicked in, the bed broken in pieces and a dresser flipped over, the report said.

Hicks was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $20,500 bond.
