Teddy bear sleepover earns money for 4-H group

They tasted German pecans, visited the goats, pigs, rabbits and horses, climbed on agriculture equipment and tried on 4-H projects.

Twenty-one stuffed animals visited the Johnson County fair on Tuesday and Wednesday, getting a local 4-H team closer to national competition.

Tuck Me In Tuesday earned the 4-H Senior Teams for Horse Bowl and Demonstration more than $100 that they will use to help them travel to the North American International Livestock Exposition in November. The teams snagged first place in Indiana, which helped them earn a bid to national competition.

The six-person team needs about $5,000 to compete in Kentucky in November. They are now about halfway to that goal, parent volunteer Kim Russell said.

Team members spent Tuesday afternoon and most of Wednesday giving the 21 stuffed animals a tour of the fair and taking photos to document and share their adventures. They visited animal barns, the homemade Indian Creek FFA ice cream stand and the fair’s escape room, checked out the projects 4-H’ers completed, took a spin on some Midway rides and tried their hand at carnival games.

Russell and other organizers got the idea from a similar Johnson County Public Library program and a program that Chick-Fil-A does as a fundraiser, Russell said.

The fundraiser is cheap, with the six team members volunteering their time and using wagons the team already had, Russell said. And the fundraiser is family-friendly, which is what the fair is about, she said.

“The fair is all about the kids. This way, we could focus on the kids,” Russell said.

Owners of the stuffed animals could follow along with the photos posted to a dedicated page on Facebook.
