Man arrested after firing gun in neighborhood

A man was arrested after police said he fired a rifle in a Greenwood neighborhood Thursday evening.

Ian Beechler, 20, of Greenwood, was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness.

An officer responded to a call of about a dozen gunshots being fired in a neighborhood on the northwest side of Greenwood just before 9 p.m. He saw Beechler laying on the ground with a rifle, a Greenwood Police Department report said.

Beechler told police he had been aiming for a glass whiskey bottle and had fired one shot. The whiskey bottle was undamaged, but a fence behind the bottle had two holes in it.

The nearest home in the direction the gun had been fired was about 100 yards away, the report said.

Beechler, 677 Joy Drive, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. He was held on $1,200 bond.
