Livestock auction raises $22,000 for scholarship

<p>The amount of donations received to honor a local 4-H’er exceeded expectations.</p>
<p>When the Burgett family from Trafalgar took in Moyra McCain’s three cows after her death in February, their goal was to receive $3,000 from auctioning one cow, Belinda Burgett said. The auction for the cow raised $22,000 for the scholarship fund in honor of McCain.</p>
<p>Around $5,400 came from the collective bid that ran throughout the week of the fair before the live auction. Thirty-seven people and companies donated money to the collective bid, Burgett said.</p>
<p>At the live auction, a company bought McCain’s cow for $4,400. After the cow was sold, more donations came flowing in from people attending, Burgett said.</p>
<p>In typical auctions, families usually receive one page of paper with the list of bidders for their animal, Burgett said. The amount of bids on McCain’s cow filled up four pages.</p>
