Livestock auction raises $22,000 for scholarship

The amount of donations received to honor a local 4-H’er exceeded expectations.

When the Burgett family from Trafalgar took in Moyra McCain’s three cows after her death in February, their goal was to receive $3,000 from auctioning one cow, Belinda Burgett said. The auction for the cow raised $22,000 for the scholarship fund in honor of McCain.

Around $5,400 came from the collective bid that ran throughout the week of the fair before the live auction. Thirty-seven people and companies donated money to the collective bid, Burgett said.

At the live auction, a company bought McCain’s cow for $4,400. After the cow was sold, more donations came flowing in from people attending, Burgett said.

In typical auctions, families usually receive one page of paper with the list of bidders for their animal, Burgett said. The amount of bids on McCain’s cow filled up four pages.
