New American Legion Post considered in Greenwood

A new veterans group is being considered to provide members with a non-smoking location to meet in Greenwood.

American Legion Post 252 meets in a building where smoking is allowed, so some members have been looking into the possibility of opening a new post in a non-smoking location, said Steve Milbourn, an American Legion member and commander of Greenwood VFW Post 4864.

So far, they’ve reached out to about 50 veterans who are interested in joining the new American Legion post, Milbourn said. The VFW is limited to veterans who have served in a combat zone, while the American Legion is open a larger range of veterans, as it includes members who were in the military during a time of war. Veterans can be and are often members of both organizations, he said.

The new American Legion post would meet monthly at the VFW building, with the possibility of them getting their own location in several years, Milbourn said. The group would raise money to provide assistance to veterans, take part in community events and offer scholarships to students, he said.

The goal is to gather all the information they need for the charter of the new post by the end of August. For the new American Legion post to form, it will need 10 current American Legion members and 10 new members, Milbourn said.
