School board candidates begin filing

The list of candidates you will choose from in school board races this fall is starting to shape up.

Filing began this week for candidates who want to be named to one of 15 open school board seats on the ballot in this year’s general election. All six local school districts have at least one seat on this year’s ballot.

School board members are in charge of hiring, reviewing and firing the superintendent. They set policies for their schools, such as the bathrooms transgendered students should use. And they approve and oversee projects by the school district, such as the implementation of new technology or a new school being built.

Filing ends at noon Aug. 24.

Here are candidates who have filed so far:

Jack L. Russell, Center Grove school board, at-large seat

Scott Alexander, Center Grove school board, at-large seat

Ryan Waggoner, Franklin school board, Needham Township seat
