Four injured in multiple vehicle crash

Four people were injured after a multiple vehicle accident on Interstate 65 during the weekend.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday on southbound I-65, near the Whiteland exit.

Initial reports were that the accident involved 11 vehicles and multiple people were injured, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

In total, four people were sent to the hospital.

One person was in critical condition, and a medical helicopter was sent to the scene. Three others were sent to local hospitals for non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

Investigators are still looking into the crash, but so far found that the crash involved four vehicles, but several others were damaged by debris, the release said.

The Indiana State Police investigation found a tow truck was slowing in the left lane to remove a disabled vehicle from the left shoulder. As the tow truck slowed, a black pick-up truck struck the tow truck from behind. A third vehicle then struck the rear of the pick-up truck, the release said.

The pick-up truck spun and stopped in the road, and then was struck by a box truck, the release said.

Several other vehicles struck the debris left in the road.

The driver of the pick-up truck was in critical condition and was flown to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. He is expected to survive, the release said.

The crash closed the southbound lanes of the interstate for about three hours for the investigation and clean-up.

No other details, including the names of the drivers and people who suffered injuries, were available on Sunday.
