Teen runaway flees police, caught

A teenage girl who was a runaway ran from police when they inquired about her and two young men on a sidewalk in the middle of the night, and an officer had to use a Taser on her.

A Franklin police officer didn’t know why the girl, a 17-year-old, began running after he stopped her and two other people who were walking on 14th Street after 1 a.m. on Thursday. The officer was checking their identities to see if they were out past curfew when the female ran, a police report said.

She ran through several backyards, jumping fences, while the officer chased after her and was yelling for her to stop, the report said. He yelled that he would use a Taser on her, and she didn’t stop, so he used the device, the report said. The teen fell to the ground.

She told police that she ran because she was a runaway.

She was treated and released at Johnson Memorial Hospital, then taken to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.
