Greenwood council appoints members to commissions

Two vacated seats on the Greenwood City Council left open positions to be filled on various commissions and boards.

The council has appointed city council members Ron Bates to the plan commission, Linda Gibson to The Social of Greenwood’s board of directors and Dave Lekse to the Johnson County Solid Waste Management District’s board of directors.

The plan commission is a city board that reviews annexation and zoning plans and sends recommendations to the city council. The Social is a non-profit organization in Greenwood that offers a variety of programs and services for seniors. The Solid Waste Management District’s board oversees trash collection and recycling throughout the county.

The city council gets to appoint its own members to positions on these boards.

Several council members were nominated for a spot on the redevelopment commission, but none received a majority of votes. The redevelopment commission manages the tax-increment financing district money.

Council members will make the appointment to the redevelopment commission after the final member of the city council is selected later this month.

City council member Chuck Landon died last month, and member Brent Corey resigned, leaving two vacancies on the nine-member board.

Former police officer Bob Dine was named to the council following a caucus Thursday. Another caucus to fill Corey’s at-large seat is scheduled for Sept. 18.
