Fire, explosion damages Franklin home

A fire and small explosion damaged a house Tuesday night in a Franklin subdivision near Nineveh Road and U.S. 31. and sent one firefighter to the hospital.

The fire started in the garage and moved into the bonus room above it at a home in the Windstar subdivision, Franklin Fire Department Spokesman Chuck Ridpath said. Investigators are not sure what caused the fire or explosion yet, and it may take a few days to fully investigate because of the extent of the damage, Ridpath said.

“While they were fighting the fire, there was some sort of explosion inside the garage. That explosion did knock one wall out and blew a lot of brick off the house. It also caused the floor in the bonus room to collapse,” Ridpath said.

He does not believe any neighboring homes were damaged, he said.

Four people were home when the fire started about 8:45 p.m. at 873 Scorpio Court. They smelled smoke and noticed a glow outside the house. When they looked outside, the garage was engulfed in flames, Ridpath said.

They were all able to get out safely. The family was placed in a hotel last night, he said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, Ridpath said. Several local departments responded to the call.
