Indian Creek football wins at Edgewood

For the Daily Journal

EDGEWOOD

Indian Creek was able to bounce back from a loss last week with a 30-15 win at Edgewood on Friday night.

Indian Creek head coach Brett Cooper said that his team was able to do so because of the work they put in.

“We just kept grinding. We have to get better each week. The best part about Indiana is that everybody makes it. We just have to improve every week,” Cooper said.

The first quarter was all defense. Each team drove into enemy territory on their first drive, but neither could make it count.

Edgewood fumbled at the Indian Creek 35-yard line, followed by a Braves turnover on downs at the Mustangs’ 32. A three-and-out for each side ended the quarter scoreless.

The second quarter was a different story. On the first play of the period, Avery Welch took a 1-yard run in for a touchdown. The play was set up by Isaiah Lacey, who had run untouched for 60 yards before being brought down just short of the goal line.

After Lacey and Welch connected for the two-point conversion, the Braves led 8-0.

Sacks by Reid Crowell and Kenny Edwards on the ensuing Edgewood possession forced a punt, but a fumble on the return let the Mustangs back into the game with a short field.

The next play was a 7-yard Edgewood touchdown, which, combined with a two-point conversion of its own, tied the game at 8-8.

A 2-yard Lacey touchdown run inside the two-minute warning gave the Braves a 14-8 lead going into halftime. The touchdown was set up by a 53-yard Welch run that included jukes, stiff arms, and sideline balancing to shake off several Edgewood defenders.

Cooper said the offensive line was key in breaking open big runs after a difficult start.

“Up front, we had some troubles early on stopping them, and then we figured some things out and Avery and Isaiah got loose a couple of times,” he said.

After trading punts on their first possessions of the second half, the teams traded touchdowns on their second.

A 72-yard Lacey run set the Braves up in scoring position, and Welch took advantage with a 4-yard touchdown run. The drive spanned 97 yards in total.

After an Edgewood touchdown, the third quarter ended with a 22-15 Indian Creek advantage.

A nine-play Braves drive that ended with an 8-yard Welch touchdown run put Edgewood down multiple scores with less than 10 minutes to go.

The Mustangs drained most of the remaining time themselves, but their 12-play drive ended with a turnover on downs in Braves territory.

Indian Creek converted two more first downs before taking a knee and ending the game.

The Braves (3-3, 3-0 WIC) return home to host Cascade next week.

“We’ve got two conference games and we can really write our own future,” Cooper said.
