Center Grove roadwork coming to prepare for new school

Road construction near a new Center Grove elementary school will have residents and commuters in White River Township taking alternate routes most of this month.

A key road that leads to Center Grove High School from the southern part of the township will be closed for two weeks.

Road improvements near the new school’s east and west entrances on Morgantown Road and County Road 450 West will include installing passing blisters, accelerating and decelerating lanes and drainage infrastructure, as well as repaving an entire stretch of both roads.

Starting Wednesday, Morgantown Road will be closed between County Road 144 and County Road 300 North. It is expected to reopen Oct. 17.

The next day, on Oct. 18, crews will close County Road 450W on the other side of the school to do the same work. That is expected to take slightly longer, but the county hopes to have the road reopened by Nov. 2.

The dates could change if the weather prevents construction on some days.

Crews will not start work on County Road 450 West until work on Morgantown Road is finished because they will serve as detour routes for each other. If both roads were closed at the same time, drivers would have to go well out of their way to navigate around the construction, Johnson County Highway Department officials said.

Area residents who can get in and out of their neighborhoods without using those two roads are encouraged to do so during the construction to ease traffic flow on those detour routes.

Center Grove Schools is paying for the road improvements, which are included in the overall paving project for the school, including the parking lots. The total cost of the project is expected to be $933,648, school officials said.
