Local woman scammed out of thousands

<p>A woman was scammed out of more than $5,000 after police said a man told her she could pay the money or be arrested on a warrant for not attending jury duty.</p><p>The woman reported at 6:02 p.m. Friday that she received a call from someone purporting to be law enforcement. The woman did an internet search for the number and found that it was from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.</p><p>The man on the phone told the woman to buy $5,500 in prepaid debit cards and told her not to tell anyone. The caller also threatened the woman with resisting arrest and told her he might need more money, according to the report.</p><p>The woman drove to the Johnson County Jail and the caller said he was a hacker and disconnected, the report said.</p><p>The caller may have used a caller identification tool to make the call look like it was coming from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, according to the report.</p>
