Library offering device to help parents

County parents can check out a device at a Johnson County Public Library that will monitor what your baby hears.

The Johnson County Public Library is now offering Starling Kits.

Starling, the world’s first wearable word counter for baby, tells parents if they are engaging enough with their baby by counting the words they speak.

The Starling doesn’t record words, but processes the audio signals from verbal engagements, turning them into data that tells how many words the baby is hearing. The device is paired with a free mobile phone application.

Starling Kits can be placed on hold and checked out for three weeks. Kits include board books, a charger and other activities.
