Karen S. (Skaggs) Downey, age 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, October 13, 2018 at her home in Morgantown.

She was born in Martinsville on August 12, 1940, to her parents, the late Marvin and Catherine A. (Paris) Skaggs. Karen was a 1958 graduate of Franklin High School and went on to marry William J. ‘Bill’ Downey on November 7, 1958 in Morgantown. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1995.

Karen retired in 2003 as an Administrative Secretary for the Logistics Department of the Indiana State Police after 42 years of service. Since retirement, she has been employed as a part-time bank teller for First Merchants Bank in Morgantown for the past 12 years.

Karen was a member of the Indiana State Police Pioneers and the Indiana State Police Alliance. She was a former member of the Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Green Township. Karen enjoyed gambling trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada. She was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and enjoyed visiting with customers at the bank.

She is survived by her children, Jeff Downey and Sherriff Robert ‘Bob’ Downey both of Morgantown; granddaughters, Ashley Shook of Richmond and Madeline Bolin of Bloomington; and three great grandchildren.

Karen was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily Downey and a brother, Lyle Skaggs.

The Rev. Lee Snider will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Karen to the Morgan County Humane Society, 690 W. Mitchell Avenue, Martinsville, IN 46151.
